Set in the years before World War I, The White Ribbon earned the Palme d’Or at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival in 2009 for its dramatic telling of a number of unexplained accidents that beset the villagers in a rural German town. The film, posing more questions than answers, is about “the origin of every type of terrorism, be it of political or religious nature,” according to the filmmaker.
