Summer heat and humidity can be a drag for those stuck in the city, but it’s also a good season to take inspiration from the blooming natural world.
During the summer the Decker Library is celebrating all the flora around us by showcasing artist books, Special Collections, and other materials about plants! Whether it be taxonomy, botanical illustrations, or products of the imagination, each of these works are inspired by plants.
Browse historical items, such as the Greek Herbal of Dioscorides, or the 1597 Gerard’s Herbal, both filled with historic botanical woodcuts. Or take a look at more modern herbals, such as Wicked Plants or The Drunken Botanist.
Take a peak at artists’ observations and innovations inspired by plant life, including Pistol, pistil: botanical ballistics, drawing parallels between flora and human weaponry, or A Mushroom ABC, a colorful guide to mushroom species.
Let these items inspire you to get outside this summer, and enjoy the greenery with an artist’s eye.
