Graduate Lecture: Lauren Simkin Berke

Lauren Simkin Berke is a Brooklyn based artist and illustrator, publishing art books and zines under the name Captain Sears Press, and creating illustrations for clients such as The New York Times, The Paris Review, Simon & Schuster, Schwartz & Wade Books, and Rémy Martin.

Berke’s personal practice starts with drawing based on photographs and ephemera, which get transformed into paintings, etchings, mixed media, assemblage, and collage work. Berke's illustrations are figurative, narrative, and increasingly conceptual, intended to evoke the experiential memory of the reader.

Berke has been recognized by American Illustration, the Society of Illustrators, Communication Arts, and Print Magazine, and they have just began teaching in the Illustration program at University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
