Learn, Live, Work and Teach Together: School of the Alternative

For a few weeks a year, 100+ people from all over the globe and from all walks of life come together to work, learn, live, and teach in the magical mountains of North Carolina.

School of the Alternative is an experiment in education and community. The school focuses on passion-driven learning and shared labor in the spirit (and on the original campus) of Black Mountain College.

Chelsea Ragan and Nelle Dunlap, co-directors and MICA Grad Alumni, will explore the functional details of living in a temporary but all-immersive educational community. They will share real-life examples of interpersonal problem solving as well as examples of the happy accidents and unexpected happenings that arise from this experience. Most importantly, they will share pathways to supported experimentation.
