Materializations: Uncanny Images

Reception and Gallery Talk: Friday, March 8, 5–7 pm

Materializations: Uncanny Images will display a series of haunting images of mysterious origin. The main feature is a gigantic opaque muslin cloth, which when lit from behind reveals what appears to be spiritual images. Artist and photographer Athalyn Rose considers this so-called “miracle cloth” unquestionable proof of the impending advent of the Apocalypse. Also on display will be a number of “thoughtographs,” Polaroid images by a Chicago bellhop named Theodore “Ted” Judd Serios that he claimed were made using psychic powers. Additional mysterious images from historical collections will also be on display. Mark Alice Durant, a photography professor at University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will lead a gallery talk during the reception.
